New dual lens technology, slim design, stunning photography, great camera experience, super fast fingerprint scanner, glorious display. Huawei launches the new smartphone P9 with the best high-end camera attached to the smartphone and many more. 

You probably have noticed that I was almost long-time iPhone user and whenever I tried to change to Android – I felt like I was not complete. As passionate blogger and Instagrammer, I love taking moment shots also videos with the smartphone. The Android smartphones that I owned in the past, didn’t had good quality cameras and I wasn’t happy with the photography results. But the moment I heard about Huawei P9 and the Leica camera, I couldn’t wait to test it!

So, I team up with Huawei and I had the opportunity to test the P9  for one week. Leica camera, is one of the most well-respected names – I mean WOW! The photography legend Leica together with Huawei created what it’s called “the ultimate camera-phone”. It features dual-lens rear camera setup, meaning not one but two cameras on its back. One lens shoots exclusively in black and white, while the two together provide a DSLR-style shallow depth of field. It takes really great shots, and those who love taking those moody shots of the morning coffee, will relish playing around with the black-and-white mode, is just absolutely gorgeous.

Both cameras have 12-megapixel resolutions, however one of them shoots in color and the other is for black and white. As well as being able to take more impressive black-and-white photos than simply converting a color image, the P9 is able to combine shots from both sensors, resulting in a rich color photo with plenty of contrast and detail.

The images you see on this post, were taken last Saturday were I was going to meet Silia for dinner at restaurant “Motto” invited by Foodora. First we met at Naschmarkt, while strolling around – I found a florist, who was selling gorgeous fresh flowers, so I couldn’t resist and bought peonies from the market. It was the perfect spot to take some shots with the new Huawei P9 (scroll to the end of the article, to see the images taken with the smartphone), and later we went to the restaurant for dinner.

I’ve been able to snap some gorgeous-looking colorful shots, with deep colorful levels and rich contrast across the whole scene and details, without needing to do any kind of editing. Shots are vibrant and rich with a natural color balance. Exposure is good as well, and the HDR mode works great when you stumble across a scene containing very bright and very dark areas. So it’s all filter free, what you see in the end of the post!

Loved capturing every single shot with rich vibrant color, that has a natural color balance!

The fingerprint reader on the P9 is very good. Since the fingerprint reader is on the back, you can wake and unlock your phone just by putting your finger on the reader. You can also use the fingerprint reader to trigger the shutter while taking photos, as well as use it to swipe left and right when viewing photos in the gallery, or to answer a call!

On the front you get a 5.2-inch display along with a very discrete Huawei logo. There is no physical home button as all the navigation keys are on-screen. Going around the rest of the phone, the volume rocker and textured power button are on the right, while the SIM tray is on the left. At the bottom you will find the speaker grill, the headphone jack and the USB Type-C charging port for the fast-charging 3,000 mAh battery.

On the back is the dual-sensor rear facing Leica camera along with the flash and the fingerprint reader. The P9 comes in six colors: white, grey, silver plus three variations of gold: rose, haze and “prestige”.

The display is bright, and works well indoors and outdoors. The screen is vivid and saturated with some great contrast, it also has good viewing angles. The bezels are thin, and at just 1.7mm thick they almost give the display an edge to edge feel. Additionally, you can change the color temperature of the display in the settings menu to a little warmer or colder to better suit your tastes, but for me the default settings were good enough.

The 8 MP front-facing camera is also solid enough, and should make selfie junkies happy. You will find the standard beautification mode available, plus the Perfect Selfie mode, as seen on the P8. This mode allows you to dial in a number of beauty presets that automatically get applied each and every time you take a selfie, making for a consistent look across all your self portraits, thus creating the perfect selfie!

Including night shot, for better night time shots, time-lapse, slow-mo, and watermark. There is also a series of live filters available if you want to get a little fancy with your picture taking. Huawei also added a light painting mode, that lets you capture light trails created by things like moving cars, or the stars in the sky. The effect can be really cool, but does require very steady hands, or a tripod mount, to get the shot to look the way you might want it.

Here you can see some images that I took with Huawei P9, without editing any filter or correcting the exposure. As you can see the light is perfect and the colors are rich and vibrant as well.
